ANN
ARBOR, Mich., Feb. 23, 2010
– UNIVAL announced today that it has signed
a contract with Malaysia Healthcare (MHC), the leading
facilitator of medical tourism to Malaysia, to create
portable medical records for U.S. patients traveling
to receive healthcare in Malaysia.
The
number of U.S. persons traveling abroad for their
healthcare is growing significantly. Some estimates
are as high as 6 million U.S. persons will be participating
in medical tourism in 2010. Many patients will be
looking to Malaysia for their healthcare needs,
where the medical practices are on par with the
best in the world and treatments performed in state
of the art facilities that have been furnished to
meet international standards. After treatment, MHC
offers the opportunity to recuperate in their beautiful
country through personalized vacation packages.
When
traveling outside the U.S. for healthcare, patients
face the challenge of conveniently and securely
transporting their medical records to their overseas
medical providers. The services UNIVAL will provide
for persons in the U.S. traveling to Malaysia solve
this problem.
Prior
to leaving for Malaysia, individuals forward their
medical records to UNIVAL where expert nurses quickly
and accurately convert them to an electronic format.
Images of all their records are made as well as
converting the information in their records to a
Continuity of Care Record (CCR) that can be easily
carried to Malaysia for use during their treatment.
The converted records are also sent to the individuals’
Microsoft® HealthVault™ personal health
record.
\After
their treatment in Malaysia, patients send discharge
summaries and other information from the Malaysian
treatment centers back to UNIVAL and that data is
sent to update their HealthVault personal health
record. Individuals can then share this information
with their treating physicians in the U.S.
"We
are excited to be able to provide this service to
MHC patients, and we’re excited to give more
patients access to take full advantage of Microsoft
HealthVault,” said Michael Gallagher, President
of UNIVAL. “Creating a portable medical record
that patients can easily take to and from their
overseas appointments will make healthcare in Malaysia
more accessible to U.S. citizens"
"As
more and more people travel across the globe, digitizing
medical information and taking ownership of their
health records are becoming increasingly relevant,
said Suresh Ponnudurai, CEO of Malaysia Healthcare.
“With the widespread acceptance of portable
devices for transporting electronic medical records,
medical tourism to Malaysia facilitates maintaining
the quality of care and, at the same time, lowering
the cost. Our partnership with UNIVAL, and their
integration with the HealthVault system, provides
U.S. persons with an outstanding approach to maintaining
the continuity of their medical records while visiting
Malaysia for their healthcare.
